I was 11 and my sister was nine. We were going to marry men who were older than 40. I was scared because some girls die through circumcision. Then my mother heard about what was happening and brought us to this home for rescued girls. I have really changed because now I know what education is. I want to continue to study and in the future I want to become a lecturer." Children Kenya Forced marriage</image:caption>

      <image:title>Resilience - Being a child soldier - South Sudan</image:title>
<image:caption>“I was at school one day when I saw soldiers coming out of a truck. Other students started to run into nearby bushes and our teachers told us to hide so they don’t kill us or take us. The soldiers threatened to kill my teachers if we refused to obey their orders. I spent one year and three months with other child soldiers doing training. We were forced to kill innocent people and loot their properties. We were told to burn their grass houses and destroy the community by the order of our rebel commander. When I started growing up, I knew what I was doing was wrong since the stains of the blood of innocent people were on my hands. Their ghosts would come and disturb me while I was sleeping.</image:caption>

<image:title>I hope - To see my sister again</image:title>
<image:caption>Canada “I bought the plane ticket to Israel. It was to depart on the 6th of April. I was so excited to finally see my sister. I haven’t seen her in 15 years. Finally, I thought, we would reunite. We would be able to be sisters for real. I could stand next to her and hug her. We have the same father but not the same mother. She was born and raised in Israel while I was born and raised in Canada. I spent my summers in Israel as a child in the town of Ashdod. I have memories of walking on the beach with her and going to the mall. I remember us spending time at our grandmother's apartment. I also remember her paintings and how beautiful they were. Her artistic talent marked me. The last time I saw her, I was only 11 years old. She was 21. Never would I have thought that it would take us 15 years to meet again. We wrote each other letters when we were young. She would send me drawings and news about her life. I still remember how happy I was when I received her letter. She was raised alone by her mother, like me. We both didn’t know much about our father and didn’t spend much time with him. Unfortunately, her mother passed away when she was only 23 years old. It still breaks my heart that I was unable to be there for her as I was so far away. Today, she is successful and married. She has a beautiful young boy, Idan. I cannot wait to meet him and to get to know him. I want to be part of her family and for Idan to know his aunt. On the 6th of April, I was supposed to be reunited with them. But the pandemic had other plans for us. A few weeks later, I found out that she is pregnant again. I hope to see them all one day.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Uganda Chapter - Azmina Jiwa—My Mother - “I Didn’t Know Where My Family Was”</image:title>
<image:caption>“The next holiday came and that’s when the 90 days was nearly over and people had to move out and I didn’t know where my parents were. I had to find money and keep busy in my holidays so I basically took the job of cleaning the hostel because at least one or the other of the cleaning ladies would be off during the holidays. So I became the hostel cleaner. And I also took a job with the cook on Sunday morning, helping her to cook breakfast at like 6am for the people staying the hostel where I was living. So that’s how I passed my holidays but also there was a lot of uncertainty because by this time, as I learnt later, that my parents and siblings had become refugees and although they had Ugandan citizenship, they still had to leave and they were refugees and they were in Italy. For almost two months I didn’t know what was happening or where they were. Then I heard from them and found out they were refugees in Italy. They didn’t know where they were going to go at that time, because no country had accepted them. Then I think after three months, America accepted them and they moved there.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Uganda Chapter - Azmina Jiwa—My Mother - “I Got A Loan”</image:title>
<image:caption>“I couldn’t carry on with my education because my family’s money had been seized by the Ugandan government. But I heard that the Ismaili Council was going to help us out so I contacted them and they said that if I was following a career then the bank would give me a loan with 2.5% interest and that way I could then carry on with my education. They would also arrange with Social Security to give us money for our living expenses. So I started looking for what career can I take with the one-year of A-Levels I had from Uganda. They gave me various options and I said: “Okay, I think I will take up Chiropody.” Then I got all the paperwork done and I got my loan and found a hostel to live in. They were not giving me much so I had to live in accommodation that was very cheap so I was living with five girls in a dormitory in a YWCA. It was £6 per week, including breakfast and dinner. For everything extra, I worked three or four evenings a week. I would do washing up of the dishes in the hostel, I would go and do some clerical work in the evening sending out doctor’s journals and I would do cleaning and ironing at somebody’s house. The pay then was 50 pence an hour.”</image:caption>
