To open a boutique

Kenya 🇰🇪 “I hope to open a boutique with vibrant styles for the Muslim fashion market. The trends I see in shops in Eastleigh really inspire me. Eastleigh is a suburb of Nairobi, Kenya, inhabited predominantly by Somalis. There are plenty of pieces of clothing out there already, so I want to design colourful bags and shoes that compliment the outfits.

Right now, I create jewellery at the Kazuri factory for the local and international markets. Each day, I make 40 pairs of earrings like this, that sell for around 400 Kenyan Shillings (4USD each), so that I can slowly raise money to start my own business.”

Kazuri, which means small and beautiful in Swahili, began in 1975 as a tiny workshop, experimenting in handcrafted ceramic beads. Its mission is to provide and sustain employment opportunities for Kenyan women, especially single mothers. It has a large workforce of over 340 artists skilled in the crafting of ceramic beads, strung into beautiful, unique jewellery.
