Trailblazers

These two are my trailblazers! As I start a series documenting personal stories from the exodus of Indians from Uganda, here is a photo of me, my brother, Shamir and my paternal grandparents, Gulamali and Roshan.

They were my strongest link to Uganda, having been born and lived there for around 40 years before being displaced.

I remember the taste of the Mandazis (fried bread that originated on the Swahili Coast), Matoke and Kuku Paka (coconut chicken curry) they would cook and the mix of Swahili and Gujarati that would flow organically together as they narrated stories in their fusion of languages.

For my own selfish reasons, I wish they were here today. However they RIP as I embark on these memories of a world lost but not forgotten.

The Uganda Chapter: An Indian Exodus.

The stories will be published by Stories Of Survival here on the project’s website, on Instagram, Facebook & Medium.
