The Uganda Chapter: An Indian Exodus

DISPLACED: Thousands of Ugandan Asian refugees arriving at Heathrow Airport in August 1972

In honour of my parents and grandparents, who were forced migrants in the 1970s, I begin a series of personal stories documenting their plight.

Each story will, through the eyes of a different person each time, illuminate various aspects of their experiences as a community.

This project coincides with the 50th anniversary of their expulsion from Uganda. In early August 1972, along with tens of thousands of Asians, they were given 90 days to leave Uganda by former president Idi Amin.

Through these posts will come an understanding of what a small piece of what displaced people, refugees and immigrants around the world are going through and the hope of what may lie ahead. No single story documenting our human experiences exists without the other.

The excerpts will be published by Stories Of Survival on the project website on Instagram, Facebook & Medium.
